Men run 6th at Panorama Farms Invitational

The University of Tennessee men's cross country team demonstrated improvement and battled its way to a sixth-place finish Friday afternoon at the Panorama Farms Invitational, running in a field stacked with four ranked teams. Host Virginia, ranked 15th nationally, took the title with 30 points, followed by No. 11 Syracuse (41), No. 24 Villanova (70), No. 26 Duke (109) and Texas A&M (155), then the Vols (158).

Tennessee lowered the spread of its first through fifth runners back under one minute, getting all five guys across the finish line in 55.87 seconds. Leading the way for the second time this season and the fourth time in his past six outings was junior Michael Spooner, who navigated the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 9.86 seconds to place 17th.

UT junior Peter Sigilai, who last season finished 18th at the meet while competing for Rend Lake, was the Big Orange's top finisher in 11th place (scoring 10th) out of 335 runners.

Men run 3rd at Louisville Classic

"It was a sub-par team performance," Head Coach Watts said. "We failed to get out the first mile to set us up for the rest of the race. It forced us to play catch-up the rest of the way, and it was just tough to make up any ground on a flat, fast course.

"Even though it was our third meet in a row, we were still strong enough to handle a fast pace. We just failed to come through."

UT junior Peter Sigilai, who last season finished 18th at the meet while competing for Rend Lake, was the Big Orange's top finisher in 11th place (scoring 10th) out of 335 runners.

Cross Country Team takes 1st at Colonial Interregional Challenge

Lead by a runner-up individual finish from junior Michael Spooner, the Tennessee men's cross country team captured first-place honors Saturday morning at the Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge. Spooner covered the challenging 8k-meter course in 25 minutes, 37.8 seconds to lead the Vols past 15th-ranked William & Mary and six other schools. UT, which tallied a low score of 41 points despite competing without last week's top runner Peter Sigilai, finished ahead of its second ranked opponent in as many weeks.

Tennessee will be back in action next weekend, competing in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday.

By Eric Trainer, Associate Director of Media Relations - Univ. of Tennessee
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Tennessee men's cross country team saw its 2009 season come to a close Saturday morning, as the Volunteers carded a sixth-place finish at the NCAA South Regional at the University of Alabama's Harry Pritchett Running Park.

The sixth-ranked Crimson Tide bunched five runners into the top 12 to claim the team title with 45 points. Joining Alabama in capturing one of the two automatic NCAA Championship meet bids was No. 21 Florida State, which grabbed a runner-up finish with 80 points. No. 25 Auburn took third with 110 points, followed by Georgia (125), Florida (143) and the Big Orange with 178.

UT junior Michael Spooner collected All-South Region accolades for the second straight year, covering the 10,000-meter layout in a career-best 30 minutes, 49.27 seconds to place 17th out of 173 runners. Spooner, who paced the Vols for the sixth time in his last eight races, including four of six outings in 2009, improved eight spots from his 25th-place regional finish of a year ago.

Freshman LeouleDegfae produced his finest team finish of the year, running second for Tennessee and placing 36th overall in 31:43.96. Also scoring were Peter Sigilai (37th, 31:45.09), Mike Brodsky (39th, 31:48.83) and Chris Bodary (55th, 32:27.88). Running but not scoring were Steve Fassino (32:35.90)and Chris Kane (85th, 33:11.64).

"We ran an O.K. race today," Vols Head Coach George Watts said. "We couldn't quite hold the pace the last three to four kilometers of the race, and some of that was due to the youth of the team. With just two seniors in our top seven, we have a lot to look forward to next year. We'll work to improve on this season's overall performance.

"I want to congratulate Michael Spooner on earning All-South Region distinction for the second straight season. He was not that far out of qualifying for nationals with about a mile to go."
